Thinking about launching your 1st website? (Part 2 – Building a Site Map)

Last blog post we began our conversation about your first website and some important ideas you need to consider..I would like to continue our discussion with the importance of Building a Site Map…

Build a Site Map (Information Architecture)

The effective organization of content is important to creating a positive user experience for your audience. When you go to a website and have a hard time finding the information you need, you become frustrated and leave…so will your customers!

Your goal should be to effectively and efficiently provide information about your company, products and services so users choose to purchase from you, not leave to buy from a competitor. Think about what sections of information are important for your audience. Keep the number of categories between 5-7. More than that and the user could become overwhelmed. Less than that and they might not take you as seriously! These 5-7 sections will be labeled and serve as your “primary navigation” for the website.

Once you identify the sections of information (Primary Navigation), you can begin to determine the pages that appear under each section.
