Today’s email is mostly for myself in an area I really need to improve on, but I thought there might be one or two others suffering from the same affliction.
The “too busy” syndrome. I spend too much time thinking about how busy I am and the long list of to do’s that mount up every day.
In a recent email I received, the author mentioned that we all have the same amount of hours every week: 168.
And it hit me. I am the same amount of busy as everyone else. Time is going at the same speed for me as it is for everyone else. Those 168 hours I get are the same as everyone else.
EVERYONE else is as busy as me (even if they don’t realize it). We are all busy using up our 168 hours for this week.
If we are all busy and at the same rate, the question becomes; “what am I spending my time on?”
The author made another interesting point: we only get one try at this week. No do overs, no restarts; just one version of this week for us to do our best with.
When I think about how I spend my time, I realize how fortunate I am. I don’t have a job that I dread going in to work with a bunch of jerks, all of us clamoring over each other for promotions, attention, etc.
I get to work with all of you every day. I get to spend my work hours doing something I love to do with a great group of people.
I get to go home to a house full of activity and joy. I get to laugh and play with two little girls who make the whole world light up. I get to spend time with my best friend/wife every day.
Sure, there is room for improvement with how I spend my time. Need a little more exercise, a little less TV; for example.
My new mantra (that I am working on) is “I am never too busy for the important stuff”.
Never too busy to help a fellow Mavidean.
Never too busy to hug my kids.
Never too busy to kiss my wife.
Never too busy to spend time with a loved one.
Never too busy to slow down and say a prayer.
PLEASE hold me accountable on this one. If you hear me say I am too busy, punch me in the shoulder or something (not too hard, I am kind of a wimp).
Make it a great day.
Jake
