Below is an email that was sent to me by Rob Bruce (one of the guys in our HTG group).
This story of bravery among those workers in the plant reminded me of one of my favorite quotes that I have sent out as part of a daily attitude email:
“Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see.” – CS Lewis
When I see or hear of moments like this one, it reminds me that we are all part of a larger world. We are part of a world that is bigger than our day to day issues.
We are blessed to be part of a world where others are willing to give their lives in sacrifice for others.
In the middle of this story you can see the story written in larger letters throughout history.
The story of sacrifice. The story of true selflessness. The story of heroes.
These stories also remind me that I have a part to play in this story. It isn’t just to sit back and admire from afar.
It is to honor these heroes by making sure that my choices everyday are something they would be proud to die for. I need to make something of myself that is worth rushing into a burning nuclear reactor for.
We owe it to all of the heroes to give it our best every day. They do and so should we.

This is one of the few times I’ve read the word ‘hero’ in the media and felt it was truly merited.

Handful of ‘heroes’ battles to keep nuclear plant under control
“Their situation is not great,” said David Brenner, director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University. “It’s pretty clear that they will be getting very high doses of radiation. There’s certainly the potential for lethal doses of radiation. They know it, and I think you have to call these people heroes.”
Another daily lesson among many for me to be thankful and that puts my relatively minor issues in perspective. I’ll be thinking about these guys for a while… Unbelievable courage.
