Bagger Vance

I tried really hard to find the video for this but couldn’t find it on YouTube anywhere (and I thought everything was out there).

For those of you who don’t know, I love golf.  Below is an excerpt from the movie Bagger Vance.  It is a conversation between the star golfer (G) in the movie and a young boy (B).

G:  You really love this game, don’t you?

B:  The greatest game there is.

G:  You really think so?

B:  Ask anybody. It’s fun, it’s hard… …and you stand on the green grass, and it’s just you and the ball. There ain’t nobody to beat up on but yourself. Just like Mr. Nunan keeps hitting himself with the club when he’s angry. He’s broken his toe three times on account of it. It’s the only game you can call penalty on yourself. If you’re honest, which most people are. There just ain’t no other game like it.

I think this scene really does summarize why golf is so awesome.

But this isn’t an email to convince to you how awesome golf is.  Like most other things, it is also a good metaphor for life (or at least portions of it).

I often think of this scene when I think about Mavidea.  This is how it goes in my head:

You really love this company, don’t you?

Greatest company there is.

You really think so?

Ask any Mavidean.  It’s fun, it’s hard…you go to work everyday with an unbelievable group of people in our little piece of the world.  There ain’t nobody you can’t count on and you only have to do your very best, everyday.  It’s the only place where can you truly make a difference.  If you want to, which most people do.  There just ain’t no other place like it.

This conversation has gone on in my head more times than I can count (with many variations, but always the same theme).

I sincerely hope that each one of you knows that I believe in you and us.  I believe we can achieve ANYTHING.

Today starts the last month of the year and we have a lot of work left to do.  It’s gonna be hard.  It’s gonna be fun.  And we are going to do it, together.

Make it a great month to end a great year at a great company.
