Today’s email is about a four letter dirty word: Risk.
Dan, did you really think I was going to drop an F bomb?
Living in the MidWest I think most of us are inherently a little risk averse. It is part of our culture. It is part of why we like living in Bloomington-Normal.
I often think of managing risk in the business sense as I think through financial decisions we and our customers face, but I didn’t think too much about the attitude and personal implication until I came across this quote last night.
“Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk that should be avoided at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.”
Denis Waitley
Think about that a little. Risk isn’t a dirty word. It is a necessary element of achievement, happiness and self-fulfillment. Without this risk we can’t reach our true potential.
Only by risking and experiencing failure can we grow past where we are today and make a better tomorrow for ourselves.
Only by risking our feelings and the possibility of rejection can we put ourselves out there to be loved by someone else.
Only by risking our pride can we set a difficult goal in front of ourselves and others and strive to accomplish it.
Are you a little too comfortable with your life? Are you a little too comfortable with the goals you have set for yourself?
Really pause for a moment and think through your average day. Think through how you spend your time and who you spend your time with. Are you risking anything?
Make sure you aren’t facing the biggest risk of all: the risk of doing nothing.
Do something a little risky today.
